Classical Education – A Tried and True Method
The new direction for schools across the country and in Santa Clarita is the Common Core curriculum. Common Core has been implemented in a number of states and partially implemented in others. It is being litigated in a number of states and is the subject of debate in this year’s elections. Whether Common Core is good or bad for education may never fully be known because it could be terminated at any moment to make way for the next education reform.
From the National Defense Education Act of 1958, to numerous initiatives of the 1960s and 70s to the most recent No Child Left Behind, Race to the Top and now Coming Core, modern education has been characterized by one thing – constant change. Government schools have experimented with programs such as whole language, outcome-based education, emotional intelligence instruction, independent learning, portfolio-based learning.
It is no wonder that parents are infuriated by this endless cycle of reform needed/implement new program for federal money/failed program/political meddling/new federal criteria/try yet another new program. It’s true that most local educators are sincerely attempting to improve education. But if your child’s education is characterized by constantly changing methodology and enormous budget concerns, what is the likelihood of an outstanding education as the outcome?
Classical education is a tried and true method that has survived for centuries because, put simply, it works! It produces articulate, engaged students who can read superbly, write beautifully, speak eloquently and think brilliantly. The classical method was born in ancient Greece and Rome, and by the 16th century, it was used throughout the Western world. This system educated most of America’s founding fathers as well as the world’s philosophers, scientists and leaders between the 10th and 19th centuries.
Our world is accelerating as technological, cultural, and geo-political forces reshape our lives. However, thinking, articulate people are always in demand. Those who can acquire new skills rapidly and independently are sought after regardless of the field. Classical education has a proven track record of turning out these very types of students.
