Lunafest 2016: Movie Night For Every Woman in Your Life
The Magazine of Santa Clarita is proud to present the leaders of Lunafest on our cover: Z Club Co-Chair Tyler Peckham, President Karen Maleck-Whiteley and Co-Chair Marguerite Berg.
Established in 2000, Lunafest is a traveling film festival created by the company that produces Luna bars, LUNA. The event showcases films by, for and about women in varying mediums and styles, from a comedic cartoon on aging to a dramatic human-interest story about a woman battling breast cancer. Providing more than just good film, LUNA asks that the all hosting non-profits donate a portion of the event proceeds to the Breast Cancer Fund.
The Zonta Club of Santa Clarita will be hosting the popular film festival in Santa Clarita for a one-night-only viewing, so get tickets soon! The event will be held at Canyon Theater Guild on April 28 at 6 p.m., and it’s great for a girls night out or mother-daughter date, as it is offers an evening full of both laughter and tears. The night celebrates womanhood, so bring all of the most important women in your life!
This year, films include: “Balsa Wood,” a story of two mixed-race siblings; “Beach Flags,” an animated short about a Iranian lifeguard; “Boxeadora,” the story of a female boxer; “Finding June,” the story of a deaf woman who has been diagnosed with breast cancer; “First World Problems,” where a housewife learns that problems can open new opportunities; and “Raising Ryland,” a look at raising a transgender child.
With the purchase of a ticket, Zonta ensures a fun night, complete with heavy appetizers by Hidden Havana, a wine ticket and popcorn. Tickets are available at lunafest.org.
Saugus High School’s Z Club, or on-campus Zonta Club, is also bringing the ever-popular event to high school and college students for just one night – and for less than the price of a trip to the movie theater. The student event will be held in the Arroyo Seco Junior High School multipurpose room on April 29 at 5:30 p.m. The same lineup of films will be shown, but the event is targeted toward students. Tickets can be purchased through the Saugus High School Z Club Facebook page or through a member of the club.
A trailer of the event’s films can be seen at www.lunafest.org/the-films. For more information about Zonta’s Lunafest, email lunafestscv@gmail.com. For more information about Saugus High School’s Lunafest, email saugushighzclub@gmail.com.
