One Story, One City
The Santa Clarita Public Library will be hosting the second annual One Story, One City event, promoting literacy and a sense of community within Santa Clarita. With the help of the Friends of the Santa Clarita Public Library and Barnes & Noble, the library hopes to promote a sense of unity and community through literature.
The chosen selection this year is Mary Coin by Marisa Silver, based on an iconic image by Dorothea Lange from the Depression era, following the relations of a woman who flees the Dust Bowl.
Event participants will have the chance to meet Marisa Silver on March 12 at 7 p.m. at the Newhall Library, where she will discuss her inspiration for Mary Coin and answer any questions the audience may have.
Two children’s books will also be featured: Esperanza Rising and Our California, which are written by award-winning author Pam Muñez Ryan and have similar themes to that of Mary Coin. Esperanza Rising tells of a young Mexican girl in 1930s California whose family is going through hard times. Our California highlights the state’s history and attractions through pictures.
The illustrator of Our California, Rafael López, will host an illustration demonstration for young artists of all ages on March 19 at 1:30 p.m. at the Valencia Library.
To promote and further One Story, One Community, the Santa Clarita Library will offer many free programs throughout March.
An art exhibit will be held on March 5 at 5 p.m. entitled “Essence of the Moment,” featuring the works of Dorothea Lange, courtesy of the American Association of University Women “Women in Time” interpreter.
There will also be a documentary screening of Grab a Hunk of Lightning, a film about Dorothea Lange with commentary by an award-winning local photographer on March 22 at 5:45 p.m. at the Canyon Country Library.
Other events will happen throughout the month including a JAM Session featuring live swing music, an ARTree family history photo craft workshop, a genealogy workshop and much more.
