TEDx Comes to College of the Canyons
On Saturday, March 19, esteemed professionals from across the world will take the stage to shed light on “What’s Trending?” during the second annual TEDx Conference at 9 a.m. at the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center (PAC).
College of the Canyons is primed and ready for this year’s event. Confirmed speakers include: Google’s top-rated futurist speaker Dr. Thomas Frey; world-renowned neurosurgeon Dr. Christopher Duma; prominent quantum scientist Dr. Salvador E. Venegas of Mexico; and political theorist Dr. Deems Morrione, one of the college’s most popular instructors. Topics range from state-of-the-art brain research to digital privacy, and in the spirit of a TEDx event, the academic subjects will be tackled in a provocative and entertaining fashion suitable for all ages and interests. General admission is $5, with tickets available for purchase through the PAC box office.
An independently organized event, TED is a nonprofit devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks that are 18 minutes or less in length. TED began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, and today it covers almost all topics — from science to business to global issues — in more than 100 languages.
COC students looking to get involved in TEDx are encouraged to attend the on-campus club’s meetings, held on Fridays at 11 a.m. at the Valencia campus’ Sustainability Center.
