The Culture Of Indian Food
Indian food, unlike most western meals, is served with multiple courses and is meant to be eaten with a group thus, mealtimes are important occasions for families to get together. Indian food has a wide range of flavors consisting of spicy, creamy, hot, salty, pungent, sweet, etc. Most meals include several different dishes, ranging from staples like rice and breads to meats and vegetables and rounded off with dessert.
It is up to you on how you mix those dishes to your taste and preference. Besides, it can’t be eaten or served without a balanced combination of flavors.
So let’s say you like a curry dish or creamy dish perhaps even hot chutney, you should not eat it by itself but combine them with basmati rice or an Indian flatbread such as naan or poori. By doing this you will help to savor the combined flavors of your meal. Remember, by overindulging in the hot, spicy and even creamy food dishes, without including a neutral starch such as rice or flatbreads, will more than likely result in indigestion.
The basic rule for combining Indian dishes to make a complete meal is that each Indian meal should consist of a starch such as rice or Indian bread, one or more main dishes which would be a meat dish or fish dish and/or a vegetable combination and last but not least, some kind of chutney.
Customarily, two vegetable dishes or a lentil dish is generally served with the meal. And, one wet dish with lots of soup and one dry dish.
Indian food can be a very healthy choice with a balanced diet of starch, vegetable and yogurts. But, like any cuisine the right portions can be consumed healthfully and be quite nourishing.
