Did You Know That… Reading is a fundamental academic skill?
It’s true. Students who cannot read well struggle in school. Math, science, history, foreign language and literature courses all depend on the students’ ability to comprehend and analyze what they read. Does your child read with ease and confidence? Reading begins with phonics. Students who cannot sound out or look up new words according to their spelling are at a tremendous disadvantage. Though English is not perfectly phonetic, this system works a good 90 percent of the time. Those who lack a solid grounding in phonics find reading a slow, frustrating process. This negativity is contagious, and soon these students find the coursework difficult for all their classes. They don’t finish their homework assignments. They come home with low-test scores. Soon, they cease to care – and that’s a big problem! Does your child need help? Like anything else, reading takes practice to improve. A regular reading program that includes practice with such skills as locating information, detecting the sequence, getting the main idea and drawing conclusions can boost your child’s ability to read “below the surface.” Is your child ready for help? The ultimate goal of admission to a good college cannot be reached with poor language skills. Without a solid grounding in phonics, your student’s ability to advance academically is questionable. Help your child with minor problems now instead of waiting until they become major problems later on, when poor grades have already limited your child’s college options.
