Fun-Damentals of Reading and Writing
Decked out in full Dr. Seuss attire, Carole Cliffe and her assistant Joyce La Hereux, kicked off Read Across America, this past March, at Santa Clarita Elementary School.
Mrs. Cliffe’s books support the Character Counts Program. One of the books, Alowishes Unusual Birthday teaches responsibility. Shaping Up Your Character A-Z Mathematically, combines math and morals. It enhances math skills while encouraging kids to model good behavior, and make wise choices. March 2nd was Read Across America Day. Students pre-school- 6th grade attended an assembly in which the books were read, and they could hold puppets of the main characters in the books. For the upper graders Mrs. Cliffe discussed the publishing process, and the importance of using details, and descriptive works in writing narrative, persuasive, and other forms of writing.
Students were given the opportunity to pre order books and a portion of the proceeds went to the school PTC, which funds special activities for the school. This Educational Fund Raiser was well received by students and staff. Students made Dr. Seuss hats, and wore their pajamas to school. “Hats” off to Laura Hughes, site coordinator of this event. The FUN-Damentals of Reading and Writing was well received.
Mrs. Lewis, a kindergarten, teacher won a Dr. Seuss clock. Her class had the most book orders. It was a “timely” event, which inspired, and engaged students of all ages.
