Trinity’s Ian Caddow received appointments to the US Military Academy at West Point, the US Naval Academy at Annapolis and the US Merchant Marine Academy at King’s Point
Mar. 1, 2016 – Trinity Classical Academy senior Ian Caddow has received appointments to three of the most prestigious educational institutions in the country: the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD, the United States Military Academy in West Point, NY, and the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, NY. Caddow has accepted the appointment to the United States Naval Academy where he will major in political science and ultimately become a commissioned Naval or Marine Corps Officer.
“My husband Wally and I founded Trinity Classical Academy because we knew there was a better way to educate children than what was being offered, and that a classical, Christian education could launch students out into the world well-prepared and well-educated, knowing what they believe and why they believe it,” said Liz Caddow. “Quite reserved and inherently humble, Ian has always had a commitment to serve others and a strong desire to pursue what is good and noble. At the Naval Academy, he will have the honor of serving not only the people within our community, but all Americans.”
Ian Caddow is the second Trinity Classical Academy senior to receive an appointment to a U.S. service academy. Spencer Klehn, Trinity’s 2014 Valedictorian, is a U.S. Military Academy “yearling” at West Point where he is majoring in physics. Caddow and Klehn have been educated in an environment that not only instills a high academic standard and a moral code of conduct, but also partners with families in order to serve the whole student. In fact, every student that has graduated from Trinity Classical Academy has been accepted to a four-year college or university with either a merit or athletic scholarship, and the class of 2016 is no different.
Caddow was Representative Steve Knight’s (CA-25) principal nominee to the United States Naval Academy and the United States Merchant Marine Academy, as well as a nominee to the United States Military Academy because of his demonstration of leadership, commitment to his education, self-discipline and sense of social responsibility. “Ian possesses the exceptional qualities we look for when we are selecting service academy nominees,” explained Representative Knight. “Excelling academically and athletically at Trinity, he also went on regular mission trips and coached athletes for the Special Olympics as well as Trinity’s Imago Dei School, which serves students with developmental delays. Students like Ian are the future of this great country, and I am proud to get them one step closer to fulfilling their potential as a leader of tomorrow.”
For over 170 years, the United States service academy appointments require a nomination from the President, Vice President or member of Congress. Members of Congress are allotted five constituents to attend each Academy at any one time.
With one of the most competitive acceptance rates for all colleges and universities, the U.S. service academies award the largest scholarships in the country, worth about $400,000. After a very competitive, lengthy and rigorous application process, an elite few are selected based on their academic excellence, superior standardized test scores, top physical condition and having displayed self-motivated leadership throughout their high school career. Students that attend a service academy will receive a four-year education, room and board, medical and dental, and a salary, then commit to spend at least 5 years serving their country as an active duty military officer.
Ian Caddow has attended Trinity Classical Academy, a school his parents founded in 2001, which has now become the fastest growing classical, Christian school in the country. Caddow has been an exemplary student and is a member of the National Honor Society, the California Scholastic Federation and the Trinity chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Ian has coached special needs football players as a part of Special Olympics, volunteered at the local food pantry and coached youth basketball and football. He has also traveled on five mission trips to Mexico to build homes for underprivileged families and teach Bible school to neighboring village children.
With a true passion for sports, Caddow excelled athletically as a 4-year varsity basketball starter and a 3-year football starter. As a football player he was named All-League and All-CIF and as a sophomore played on Trinity’s CIF-SS 8-Man Div. 2 Championship Team. Ian was also named All-League in basketball and in 2014 helped lead Trinity to a CIF-SS Div. 6 title with a 37-point performance in the CIF championship game. As a junior, he was named Trinity Male Athlete of the Year.
“There is no greater honor and no greater purpose than to become a part of the United States Military and to attend the U.S. Naval Academy where I will ultimately be able to impact people’s lives and serve my country with integrity, commitment and courage,” said Ian Caddow. “Trinity Classical Academy taught me how to be a proud man of God with purpose, integrity, honor and courage while affording me countless opportunities to develop leadership skills and heightened my desire to help change the world. The Naval Academy will develop me morally, mentally and physically to assume the highest responsibilities of leadership and service to our country.”
