Is Your Child “Lazy” or Are They Lost?
Most teens are described as being lazy when their grades take a dive! We have all said this about our teen when we are frustrated and they are not performing. But the truth is we are all wired to be productive and seek success.
When a student is struggling they will often cope with the feelings of inadequacy by demonstrating what we as parents call “laziness”. This reaction protects their self-esteem by hiding behind an attitude of “I don’t care”. It is important as responsible educators and parents that we take a closer look. What challenges are they not able to meet? Are they lost and don’t want to admit it?
There are many causes that we as parents can look at to determine the real issue.
Are they embarrassed to admit that their skills are weak and they need help?
Does a social or emotional issue distract them?
Do they have a deficit in executive functioning and cannot sequence or complete tasks and assignments on time?
Are they overscheduled with activities and frequently exhausted due to lack of sleep?
Do they exhibit signs of perfectionism, and are unable to move forward if the task is not perfect?
By describing the student‘s behavior by saying “he’s just lazy” it alleviates the responsibility to find solutions and makes the problem solely the student’s. This is actually harmful. Using “lazy” as a label perpetuates a negative self-image and puts them in a place that lacks any expectation they will succeed. It can become their identity.
At Math Support, it is part of our culture to discard this notion of “lazy.” Instead we work with them and encourage them to realize their potential.
At Math Support Services we are focused on motivating and mentoring students, creating an environment where they can safely ask questions, prepare for tests and even take a class that will transfer to there home school.
