Prom is for Everyone
Prom. The excitement of the dress, tux, flowers, venue, date and everything that comes with it is unmatched, and the event itself is a rite of passage for seniors, a culmination of their four years in high school and the final event before graduation.
Although California is a relatively progressive state when it comes to same-sex couples, students still face bullying from their peers when they choose to be open with their preferences. In an attempt to make prom a safe event, the OUTreach Center in Lancaster puts on an LGBTQ+ prom every year for students all over Southern California.
This year’s event is set to take place on May 7 with an Alice in Wonderland theme and is open to all high school students in Antelope or Santa Clarita valleys’ Gay-Straight Alliances (GSA).
An avid supporter of the annual event is the Saugus High School GSA. For the last four years, their members have attended with growing numbers each year. Each year the club aims to pay for any interested William S. Hart Union High School District student involved in their school’s GSA; admittance and transportation is covered by a multitude of fundraisers.
Last year, the club was able to provide tickets, transportation and flowers for all 45 students who attended from the Hart district, a fundraising feat in itself.
