SCCS: Developing Servant Hearts
February 25 and 26, junior high and high school students from Santa Clarita Christian School (SCCS) piled into cars and headed out to serve at more than a dozen different ministries throughout Los Angeles. This two-day event called iServe is an experience unique to SCCS.
For two days students serve in the name of Jesus, encouraged by His promise in Matthew 25:40, “…for whatever you have done to one of the least of these my brothers, you have done to Me.”
This year SCCS students served at the Ronald McDonald House, The Oaks Camp, The American Cancer Society, Help the Children, Backyard Missions, Fred Jordan Mission, SCV Pregnancy Center, as well as visiting assisted care facilities and packing boxes for Prayer Angels for the Military. All the students served alongside their teachers and a number of parent volunteers.
Under the leadership of Student Activities Director, Garrick Moss, teachers planned service projects that were closest to their hearts and presented these opportunities to the kids in a kick-off chapel.
Additionally, students attended a special chapel prior to iServe that helped prepare students’ hearts for service through messages, prayer and worship.
“When iServe was over, many students were convicted about their own selfishness,” said Moss. “All had their eyes opened to the neediness of people around them compared to their own abundance.”
Some students commented, “I have so much, I should be more grateful. It challenged us to step up and it took our focus off ourselves and onto others.” And, “There are people with nothing. I am so privileged.”
Developing servant hearts is a core value at SCCS. “iServe is an important program that helps to build a pattern of service in the lives of our students, so whether they’re at SCCS, college, or living as an adult involved in a local church, they will continue to look for ways to serve the Lord,” said Moss. “The iServe program is one of the many unique offerings at SCCS that makes the school such a special place.”
Serving grades K-12, SCCS pursues academic excellence, promotes spiritual growth and encourages character development in order to produce students who are prepared to make a difference in the world for God. SCCS is now enrolling for the 2016-17 school year.
