Celebrating Mother’s
Mothers Day as many believe was not invented by Hallmark. In the early 1900’s Ann Jarvis, after her mother’s death, wanted to create a special day to honor mothers. With backing of local churches, department store’s, and a letter writing campaign to newspapers, and the local government, her persistence paid off in 1914 when Woodrow Wilson signed an official measure making the second Sunday of May “Mother’s Day”.
Mothers Day is a day to honor our mom, grandmas, step-moms, foster moms, aunts, or any woman that has loved you and done sweet things for you all year. What better way to honor your mom than by making something sweet from your heart to hers. Bake a cake, brownies, cookies or even a pie… or how about some chocolate long stem roses? Whatever you create from the heart, and given with love means the most.
One of my most favorite quick and easy and delicious recipes is Dark Chocolate Gnache Cake:
Bake a single layer 10-inch round chocolate cake and place on a 10-inch cake board and let cool.
Bring to a boil one cup of heavy whipping cream or Pastry Pride (sold at Clarice’s) and remove from heat. Stir in one pound of dark chocolate Merkens coating (sold at Clarice’s) and mix until smooth and well blended.
Place baked cake on a cooling rack. (Cover your work surface with waxed paper-it’s going to be a sweet mess!) Pour the chocolate mixture over the cake-making sure it’s totally covered. After the chocolate stops dripping, place the cake on a pretty tray or platter. The cake can be enhanced with big puffs of whipping cream, fresh fruit, or even sprinkles.
Join us on Tuesday, May 3 at 7 p.m. for our monthly chocolate class. We will be serving a delicious chocolate Gnache cake!
