Delight in the Cuisine of Guadalajara!
Guadalajara is the second largest city in Mexico and is the capital and largest city of the Mexican state of Jalisco. Guadalajara has a rich culinary culture that is not to be overlooked with their food and drinks.
It is an historical hub, with an Aztec influence. The name Guadalajara means river/valley of stones. It is a cultural center of Mexico considered to be home of mariachi music and host to many large-scale events such as film festivals, international book fairs and globally renowned cultural events which draw international crowds! Many artists and scholars have come to call it home and the city has restaurants and eateries that any food lover would go crazy for from Mexican food to ultramodern French food.
Guadalajara cuisine is a mix of pre-Hispanic and Spanish influences but the dishes have their own unique flavors and are made with local techniques. The Mexican spices and meaty delicacies which enhance this food cuisine will delight your senses. Why not savor a drink of tequila as well. Tequila is the country’s most famous beverage and the Tequila Trail home base is the state capital of Guadalajara!
The cuisine of this region has so much to offer from the coastal fish to the hearty meat dishes to the characteristic signature dish of Guadalajara, which is the Tortas Ahogadas, the most famous culinary pleasure which are “ drowned sandwiches” made with a dense roll which is an oblong, a “bolillo” bun, a delicious baguette style bread which is stuffed with pork and drenched in spicy salsa. Delicious! The tortas is said to hold a special place in the hearts of many people who are from Guadalajara or have spent any time there. Many people go to great lengths to search out tortas ahogadas in places outside the region. The claim that Guadalajara makes is, that no one really visits Guadalajar without making a stop to try a torta ahogada!
You can always satisfy your taste buds with a delicious bowl of pozole, which is corn hominy soup made with either pork or chicken and if you like your pozole spicy then try red pozole. Another regional specialty is birria, which is a spicy Mexican meat stew made with either goat or lamb. The meat is slowly baked with spices, traditionally in underground earthen ovens. Served with a plate of minced onions, cilantro and limes to garnish to your liking will certainly fill you up and satisfy any craving you might have. Whatever you choose to satisfy your gastronomic pleasure will be a winner as the food is delicious and unpretentious.
