Doie’s Delicious “Dirty Hand” Cookies But honest, our hands were clean when we made them!
There is a story behind the name…
Once upon a time, a little girl, Doie, lived with her poor immigrant parents in a tiny village in the country. Though they were very poor, Doie’s mother worked hard to keep their little cottage clean.
Not so for Murrata, the ancient one who lived in a hovel next door.
Murrata looked like the witch from Hansel & Gretal:
Murrata frightened all the village children. But witch or no witch — Murrata made absolutely the most delicious cookies ever: Chewy, chocolately, and nutty; these cookies were like no other. But because Muratta’s kitchen was not clean, the village children were forbidden to eat her cookies.
Murrata had never given anyone her secret recipe. But the dough was so thick! Murrata was getting too old to make the cookies herself.
One day, Murrata asked the children if any of them would help her to mix the dough. Doie was the only child brave enough to help. Thus, Doie learned Murrata’s recipe. From then on, Doie made the cookies for Murrata, but in her mother’s very clean kitchen. Thereafter, Doie had all the “Dirty Hand Cookies” she ever could have wanted.
Eighty years later, they are just as good. But don’t take our word for it, try one for yourself.
