Generations of Expertise Century Draperies offers rare custom services from fabrics to upholstery
In an industry of increasingly hard-to-find skills, one family business offers the trades, talents and decades of experience their customers need to craft the finest in custom furniture, draperies and more. Century Draperies in Palmdale has stood the test of time thanks to generations of experience in an industry that can’t be learned in school but is rather passed on from parent to child.
“My mom started this business out of her garage and opened her first storefront in 1973,” said Della Acosta, owner since 1998, who has reaped the benefits of a family education. “I grew up in this business. My mom made me learn how to sew, put a drapery together, and manufacture everything from slipcovers to furniture. My dad taught me how to make and install rods.”
In the business for more than three decades, Della slowly picked up each trade and talent as she grew up. Starting with sewing and upholstery, she learned every aspect, eventually running the books and the office.
“It’s not something you can go to school for today; it’s a talent that’s passed on,” Della said of her education and training. “For that reason, it’s rare to find someone who has this type of skill.”
Della has searched far and wide to hire the best seamstresses and upholsterers, using her well-trained eye to spot other generations-long experts. In addition to a stellar team, her adjacent workroom allows her to create and customize anything for any customer.
“With the exception of a few brands of blinds, everything is manufactured on-site; your project or order won’t get farmed out,” Della said proudly. “I pride myself on my workmanship, knowing that I give my customers the best quality that’s available to them.”
Century Draperies specializes in custom draperies, cornice boxes, bedspreads, bed skirts, pillow shams, decorative pillows, upholstered headboards, benches and ottomans; they also reupholster sofas, dining and living room chairs.
“I can pretty much make everything,” Della said.
Century Draperies is a proud Showcase Dealer of Hunter Douglas Priority products, featuring Hunter Douglas’ complete line of custom window fashions coverings including shades, shutters, Roman shades, verticals and blinds, as well.
From start to finish, a typical custom project at Century Draperies begins with an in-depth inquiry to determine the customer’s vision. By asking questions, Della learns what the client wants, their style (i.e. traditional, contemporary, eclectic), and their desired color scheme. During the initial consultation, Della is prepared with color and/or fabric options and can make targeted recommendations since she already has insight into the customer’s style and taste. After measuring and finalizing the project, Della will discuss price and get to work on your dream project!
“I listen to your ideas or can make suggestions if you aren’t sure where to go next,” Della said. “We work with you to come up with a custom design that’s perfect for you.”
