Green Rated Homes are Now Here
What is a Green Rated home? It’s a scientific way of measuring a home for its safety, energy efficiency, and the cost of operating that home. If you had a chance to browse for a new home in the last two years, you may have noticed an energy rating similar to the energy cost stickers on an appliance. Newer homes are valued based on their energy performance, and builders will often feature the low cost of operating their new home, and use those Green Ratings as a selling feature.
Now for the good news, your existing home can now be rated for its energy efficiency. This rating system is based on a point system. A Green Rated home with a high point system can earn an extra nine percent on resale. That’s $9,000 per one hundred thousand, an extra $45,000 of ROI (return on investment) on a $500,000 home. A Green Rated home tells the new buyer that this home will cost less on utilities (as much as 30 to 60 percent less) than a home that isn’t Green Rated. That can make the difference of nine percent more in resale, and selling the house much faster.
As for living in a Green Rated home, it can offer many benefits. Safety is a big plus, but comfort is the most talked about benefit in a Green Rated home. Modern HVAC systems will give you the biggest pay back as well a very comfortable lifestyle. Good quality windows will reduce energy, and the best benefit will be the reduced noise levels. Attic insulation combined with radiant barriers will cool the hose down in the summer, and help keep it warmer in the winter.
