If You Do Nothing Else This Summer Learn to swim as family at Academy Swim Club
The most important skill your child can learn this summer is to learn how to swim. While there are benefits to learning to swim at any age, mastering the skill can be beneficial throughout your life.
With summer nearing, you are bound to find yourself near water. And according to the Center for Disease Control, thousands drown, but if you can prevent it, why not learn how to swim? It can be lifesaving. It is also a healthy form of exercise, building strength, breath control and endurance. Swimming allows you to keep your heart rate up, tone your muscles and get a full body workout with less impact.
Not only is it lifesaving and good for your health, swimming also is fun. Being in the water feels good, and being buoyant in the pool can give you a sense of freedom. You can cool off on a hot day, play games in the water, or just chill and relax.
“In California, water is part of our social structure, with pool parties, beach trips, fun and recreation,” says owners of Academy Swim Club, and husband and wife team, Jim and Nikki Miller. “It is imperative to learn this lifelong skill to be a healthy part of it.”
The Millers have more than four decades of experience teaching students of all ages how to swim. Certified with experience teaching all levels – including infants, special needs and springboard diving coaching – Jim and Nikki bring a wealth of expertise to the swimming pool. Nikki has a Master’s Degree in psychology and is a licensed psychotherapist and past Registered International Supervisor of Child Play Therapists. Their adult sons are also involved in the business. After all, it is because of them that the business began. Years ago, when Jim & Nikki went out for lunch and left both boys with a babysitter, 1 year old Dakota fell into the spa while the babysitter was inside, on the phone. Fortunately, 4 year old Garrett rescued him, but it could easily have become a double drowning. “As drowning is the leading cause of accidental death among young children, we promote water safety activities in our lessons on a regular basis,” says Nikki and Jim.
Academy Swim Club has two convenient locations (28079 Smyth Drive in Valencia and 23955 Calgrove Blvd. in Newhall) and offers swim lessons for all ages and levels, beginning as early as two weeks through adulthood – from womb to tomb, as the experts like to say. The private facilities are state-of-the-art and Academy Swim Club has become a trusted name in the community for swimming lessons, offering 90-92 degree heated indoor pools with open swim practice for all students and their families. Swimmers can also host a birthday party at the club.
Academy Swim Club is open seven days a week. For more information, call 661-702-8585 or visit www.swim4life.com.
