Oldest Bar in LA County – Eighth & Rail
Established in 1878, Newhall was a thriving Western town, stacked with hotels, trading posts and saloons. The one most notorious was the Derrick Saloon, located on the corner of 8th and Main streets (now Railroad Ave.), steps from the train station. They not only offered libations for general currency but also locally mined gold and anything else worth trading. Many decades later, after changing ownership a number of times, it has been re-imagined as Eighth & Rail. This simple little bar now stakes it flag as being one of the longest running businesses in the Santa Clarita Valley – and one of the oldest drinking establishments in all of Los Angeles County!
Eighth & Rail is a tribute to the industrial development of Los Angeles County in the late 40s. This was a time when the railway passing through Newhall was the main transport from LA to San Francisco, as well as the foundation of the Santa Clarita Valley in the early 1900s. The design of Eighth & Rail is a throwback to the classic Main Street saloon, with warm Edison lighting and a rustic wood finish. This modern-day saloon offers a well-balanced menu of craft and traditional beers, along with a list of rejuvenated classic cocktails. A limited food menu will be introduced very soon. Enjoy the pool table, new dartboards networked to compete against other dart players around the world and the 12-foot shuffleboard table, available free of charge, along with giant Jenga! We host a blend of golden oldies, 80s rock and new alternative. DJs are available on the weekends, along with live shows that will be announced in future. Music videos and sports games are projected on nine screens. So, with that said, the team at Eighth & Rail would like to invite you down to be a part of the newest chapter in a very old book!
