Is It Time For A Change?
Making the decision to move our parent or loved one into an assisted living community doesn’t need to be difficult if we approach the challenge in a positive way.
For our parents, they are accustomed to being independent and maintaining their own homes. The thought of leaving a beloved home that holds many years of memories can bring sadness and grief.
As children, we are used to seeing our parents as strong, in-charge people providing help and support and we truly fear seeing mom or dad struggling.
It is easy to overlook signs of decline in older adults, so you may want to ask yourself some of the following questions to determine if your parent is ready for a life-style change.
• Is your parent telling you they are eating, but you’re seeing food go bad in the refrigerator?
• Have you seen your parent wearing the same clothes when you go to visit?
• When you look around the house or yard, is it as neat or clean as it used to be?
• Is your parent able to take medication correctly?
• Is your parent able to respond appropriately in an emergency?
• When you really look at your parent, do you see that vibrant person from years ago, or do you see a more limited person who needs some help one hour a day, three hours a day, or around the clock?
Remember, although this is a difficult decision, by addressing these concerns, you are taking the first step to ensure your parents are cared for, comfortable and safe.
And as you begin to talk about assisted living options with your parents, it’s important to listen to their fears and concerns and address them. By communicating and involving them in the decision, you can turn a difficult decision into a positive experience!
