Women in History Presented at Saugus High School
Students at Saugus High School got a special treat. Six women, from students to teachers to administrators, portrayed six famous and remarkable women in the 9th Annual Women in History program.
Sponsored by the American Association of University Women (AAUW), the program was produced by career transition advisor Louise Willard for the student body.
Eunice Kennedy Shriver (portrayed by Louise Willard, CTA) – Eunice was one of the Kennedy sisters, a social worker, businesswoman, and creator of Camp Shriver, which evolved into the Special Olympics. Eunice was also awarded the Medal of Freedom.
Margaret Mitchell (portrayed by Jodi Guerrero, English Teacher) – Author of “Gone with the Wind,” Margaret was also an activist and helped rebuild the French village of Vimoutier after it was bombed during the Normandy Invasion of World War II.
Sophie Kurys (portrayed by Delinda Abbott, Assistant Registrar) – Sophie was an athlete and professional baseball player. During World War II, she was part of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, earning the league’s Player of the Year Award in 1946.
Josephine Baker (portrayed by Alexis “Osato” Omoregie, student) – Josephine was a civil rights activist, singer, dancer, pilot and spy. She was the first African-American woman to star in a major motion picture (“Zouzou”) then moved to France where she assisted the French Resistance during World War II, receiving the Legion of Honor from Charles de Gaulle.
Eva Peron (portrayed by Jill Young, student) – Also known as Evita and the inspiration for the Tony Award-winning Broadway play of the same name, Eva was an actress, model and politician. She was married to the President of Argentina and established the “Fundacion” to improve the lives of the people of Argentina.
Ann Bancroft (portrayed by Bethany Farnell, student) – A coach, PE teacher and explorer, Ann became the first woman to reach both the North and South Poles, as well as one of two women to ski across Antarctica.
