Happy Father’s Day!
Father’s Day is just around the corner! June 19, we celebrate this important day on the third Sunday of June every year. The first Father’s day was celebrated in June of 1910. Sonora Smith a daughter of a widower that raised six children and ran a family farm, remembers how hard her father worked, and wanted to honor him with a special day, much like we have for mothers. The idea caught on and many communities across the nation started to celebrate on a Sunday in June. No federal action was taken to create a national holiday until 1966 when Lyndon Johnson created an executive order that designated the third Sunday in June was a day to honor dads, grandfathers, uncles, and stepfathers. You can buy your father, grandfather, uncle, or stepdad, another mug with his name or the word dad, but I’m sure he knows his name and already has at least 20 of these. Or how about a tie or some sox, I’m sure he can squeeze at least one more in his drawer.
But something made from the heart, made with love that will not fill the drawers or gather dust… How about a chocolate layer cake or a jumbo chocolate chip cookie, but even taster and easier to make and something that all dads love, chocolate covered pretzels? You can make them plain or kick them up a bit and make gourmet pretzels. First melt your chocolate coating (milk, dark or white) that you purchased from Clarice’s. Melt in a double boiler or two sauce pans nested together. Bring your water to a boil turn the water off. In the top pan put your chocolate coating with a rubber spatula stir till all melted. Dip the pretzel twists or sticks in the chocolate and place on waxed paper to dry. (You can use a plastic fork with the center two tines broken out to remove the pretzels from the chocolate) You can make these Gourmet by filling the holes of the pretzels with Carmel (purchased at Clarice’s) or peanut butter, before dipping or add a few sprinkles or chopped nuts after they have been dipped. Anything dipped in chocolate and given as a gift is a gift of love!
