The Perils of Imposter Professional Pet Sitters

by | Jun 1, 2016 | Pet Services

With pets being an integral part of our families, pet care has taken on a new meaning in the past decade, more often resembling that of regular childcare than animal care. We’ve become more aware of better dietary choices, new exercise options, improved training techniques and so much more. At Doggy Duty US, we continually educate ourselves with the latest in pet care expertise to continually build on our extensive professional experience and most importantly improve our safety practices. However, often times, safety is highly over-looked and underrated in the value of a true pet care professional.
Many people make the assumption anybody can responsibly handle domesticated pets and watch over a home; however, the truth is, that simply is not the case. Anyone can say professional on a business card or website, but with more serious incidents being reported every year, it is important as pet parents we are capable of determining the imitators from the originators. Because all it takes is one mistake that can cost significant or irreplaceable financial damage, pet/personal injury, or worse case sadly, even death…here are a few tips to avoid setting oneself up for heartbreak when looking for a pet sitter:
• Always ensure pet sitter is licensed, bonded, insured and certified
• Do not hire a pet sitter from a printed-paper flyer taped on a pole or from door-to-door solicitation – would you find a babysitter or doctor this way?
• Ask detailed questions about service, experience and request to speak with references
Lastly, not all households are the same and pets are as unique as their owners. This is why we pride ourselves on ensuring the highest levels of safety to prevent incidents like the ones below:
• Sitter used bathroom and left client’s home. Toilet was clogged causing water to continuously run. Client suffered damage to flooring and walls.  Paid $27,692
• While on walk, dog in care of sitter, bit a pedestrian attempting to pass them on the sidewalk. Paid $15,971
• Sitter gave incorrect cat insulin shot and cat became very sick. Paid $4,174
• Dog jumped out of the car window while being transported. Dog suffered multiple injuries. Paid $14,013
• Sitter took computer, television and other items from client’s home. Paid $5,000
• Sitter stole client’s prescription medication. Paid $763
So, don’t mess with the rest, trust the best with Doggy Duty US, we guarantee complete peace of mind for your and your pets at all times.
