Potter’s Wheel – More Fun When Shared Together
The potter’s wheel is probably what you imagine when your friend tells you that they take a pottery class. For those that love the notion of sitting at the wheel, there is a studio in Santa Clarita Valley that offers classes. Bring a friend, because an experience shared is always better!
Classes are geared toward the beginner at Ceramic Artist Studio, Inc. so don’t worry if you haven’t played with clay yet. First you’ll learn some basic hand building techniques like scoring your clay to ensure a secure connection, and how to create by pinching or by using slabs of clay much like rolling out dough for cookies. You’ll be shown how to add texture and patterns to decorate the surfaces. After several weeks of getting a feel for the clay, you’ll be shown how to “throw” on the potter’s wheel.
It’s very exciting to watch the instructor take a ball of clay, bring it up to a cone shape and then flatten it to condition it and make it ready for its transformation into a cylinder. It’s actually mesmerizing! When you sit at the wheel for the first time, the instructor will show you correct body posture and help you understand how to use your body to help shape the clay, not only your hands and fingers.
Your first time making something will be a memory you will always remember! You’ll enjoy the feel of the cool clay spinning in your hands, watching how the slightest touch can change the shape of the piece, and the satisfaction of being in control of the clay.
