Energy Savings
I was asked to go out and bid on pool, spa and water feature service for a large HOA in Canyon Country that overlooks the 14 freeway. I could not believe what I found; the place is a gold mine of energy savings.
They have two large brass 5 hp pumps that push the water to the water feature and a 2 hp pump that filters the water feature. Combined, the water feature pumps are using 13,000 watts every hour that they are on. Does that sound like a lot to you? Think of it this way, they are using the same electricity as 130 hundred watt light bulbs. I could replace them with energy efficient variable speed pumps and they would save $7,000 a year in electricity. They also will qualify for a $3,500 SCE commercial pump rebate.
The pool has two 1.5 hp pumps using 4,000 watts per hour. I could replace them with energy efficient variable speed pumps and they would save $1,500 a year in electricity. They also will qualify for a $2,000 SCE commercial pump rebate.
The spa has one 1.5 hp pump using 2,000 watts per hour. I could replace it with an energy efficient variable speed pump and they would save $1,100 a year in electricity. They also will qualify for a $600 SCE commercial pump rebate.
The pool has three 500 watt lights and the spa has one 300 watt light. I could replace them with LED pool lights and they would save $1,300 a year in electricity and receive a $650 SCE rebate.
So for this location the HOA will save $10,400 a year in electricity and qualify for $6,750 in rebates. Along with the energy savings what else do they get you ask? They will get much cleaner and clearer water, they will use less chemicals, the filters will last longer, the heaters will last longer and they get new equipment. So how much will all this cost the HOA you ask? The total job cost is $13,500 less the SCE rebate of $6,750 that we will process for them and take off of their invoice. With SCE on-bill financing they would have $281 added to their power bill for 24 months. So while they are saving $867 a month in electricity they only have to pay $281 a month. New equipment and make $586 a month, not a bad deal. Oh, I almost forgot. They will save $100 a month in chemical cost also. So they are making $686 a month. Now that’s a fantastic deal!
