How Do We Get Out of the Way of Ourselves?

by | Jul 1, 2016 | With Your Family in Mind

Have you ever asked yourself the question, “Am I the person that I want to be?” If you answered, “no” or “not really” or even, “not at all” then the next question is, “why not?” For every individual the answers will be unique to their personality. There might be something you have been struggling with for a long time or you feel it is just too hard to do anything about. Or, when we think about what it would take to change the behavior or situation, overwhelming feelings rush in paralyzing us and we do nothing. It’s sometimes challenging to see our own problems or situations objectively because we are “too close” to it and may not have the necessary perspective to create change. Here are some common questions that would be explored in depth in therapy to uncover and discover what is keeping us from achieving this goal:
1. Are you in denial of what you can control and blame others for your life situations?
2. What is your self-talk (the constant mental chatter)?
3. Are you lacking acceptance of things you cannot control?
4. Do you continuously live in the past and future and not in the present moment?
5. Are you comparing yourself to others, or to your own expectations?
6. Are your relationships a priority?
7. Have you explored your passion and/or purpose?
8. Are you harboring resentments?
9. Have you figured out how you can best deal with stress?
10. What are your fears and are they valid?
These are just some of the questions that if answered, can be life changing. Every decision we make leads us in a direction of growth or decline. “Get busy living or get busy dying” This is a quote from the movie “Shawshank Redemption” and it has stayed with me for over 20 years now. We are so busy in our daily lives that it is sometimes hard to find the time for self-improvement. Therapy is a great place to schedule that time and give yourself the gift of becoming the person you were meant to be.
My therapeutic approach is based on establishing a genuine, trusting relationship with clients. This enables the client to express their thoughts and feelings without fear of judgment and leads to greater insight and positive life changes.
