Kitten Adoption
Many veterinary clinics have kittens and cats for adoption and Copper Hill Animal Clinic is no exception. This year has seen a bumper crop in kittens! Here are a few medical tips for anyone adding a new kitten to the household.
First, get your kitten a veterinary appointment as soon as possible, and institute a quarantine from other pets until that time. It is possible your new pet is carrying a parasite or was exposed to a virus and is not yet showing signs of that problem. Having your entire household of pets fall ill because of the new pet is no fun at all!
Get your kitten a fecal test. Many fecal parasites show no clinical signs but can still be contagious. Some parasites such as giardia are even contagious to people. These issues are easily treated if caught promptly and earlydiagnosis will save a lot of trouble and be less expensive in the long run.
Have your veterinarian run a small blood test for feline leukemia and feline immunodificiency virus. You will recieve the results quickly, and both of these diseases can affect your kittens immune system as well as potentially be contagious to other cats in the household. It’s best to know if your kitty has these issues, as it will help you plan for its future.
Start your kitten’s vaccination series. Diseases that used to cause profound illness and death in cats have been dramatically reduced because of the incredible vaccines available to today’s kitten owners. Running the entire series of vaccines will help protect your kitten for a long time to come.
Schedule a spay or neuter for your kitten. Millions of cats go into shelters every year and most never come out again. This is a problem humans have fostered, and it is our job to try and fix it. (pun intended!) A brief procedure will keep cats out of shelters and get us a little closer to solving the pet overpopulation problem.
If you are interested in adopting a kitten or cat who has already been fecal tested, blood tested, spayed/neutered, de-wormed and had its vaccines started, please contact us! We have some charmers this year!
