Santa Clarita: Setting the Scene for Famous Films
“Santa Clarita goes back to [the days of] Charlie Chaplin, and we’ve been a hotbed of filming ever since,” says Evan Thomason, the Economic Development Associate for Film Santa Clarita.
Santa Clarita has always been used as a film location, making cameos in 10 Things I Hate About You, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and many others due to our proximity to Los Angeles and variety of scenery. Santa Clarita has doubled as Afghanistan, Virginia, Mexico, a basic suburb and a big city as we “have a unique community with different pockets that can look like different places,” according to Thomason.
On June 6, Old Town Newhall was buzzing with activity as trailers and film equipment filled Main Street, leaving residents and onlookers wondering.
A television reboot of the 2007 blockbuster Shooter has made its filming headquarters in Santa Clarita. Recently, the series took over popular Main Street haunts like the German Autohaus for a garage scene and Persia Restaurant on June 6, with executive producer Mark Wahlburg on set.
Key Assistant Location Manager Javi Robles stated that production will, or already has, taken place at College of the Canyons, a Newhall home and the Hyatt Regency Valencia. The series is set to premiere on USA on July 19.
A PixL TV feature film also took advantage of the closed street, filming in front of and inside Canyon Theater Guild for Once Upon A Date. This romantic comedy will finish filming on July 15 and will premiere next summer.
Current television shows filmed in Santa Clarita include: Blunt Talk, NCIS, Switched at Birth and a new Netflix original starring Drew Barrymore called Santa Clarita Diet. In 2016, Snarknado 4, The Prey and Scales are set to film in Santa Clarita.
