Spotting Stars of the West
An interesting stretch of road across Newhall’s Main Street features prolific western stars of Santa Clarita, a commemoration to those who defined a genre and country lifestyle starting of course, with William S. Hart. Maybe you’ve heard of him? Other well-known greats like Dennis Weaver, Mellisa Gilbert, and the classic Mr. John Wayne can be found along this Walk of Fame. But what of the names you’ve never heard of, the stars you never got the chance to know or see? The stars you may have missed.
Diamond Farnsworth: Given his star April 16 of last year. Diamond is a stuntman and stunt coordinator for films and television for well over three decades. Working on well known shows like NCIS as stunt double for Mark Harmon, He has also worked with Kevin Costner , Jeff Bridges and even Sylvester Stallone! Following in the footsteps of his father, Richard Farnsworth, his future projects and flashy stunts are eagerly awaited by all who know of his work.
Waddie Mitchell: His star was shown April 18, 2015, a western-style poet who has been left unseen. Spinning tales of life’s tragedies, joys, and its woes – An experience that every single one of us knows. Rugged dusted tumbleweeds rolling in the wind, as life goes by in its lackadaisical spin. The adrenaline rushed wandering cowboy lifestyle. Find his star, come on by, stop and stay for a while.
Graham Greene: Honored in 1981, Graham Greene is a Native American star for stage and film, Greene originally started off as an audio technician. After graduating from The Centre for Indigenous Theatre’s Native Theatre School he began performing locally as well as abroad. His reputation gaining role came as Kicking Bird in the film “Dances with Wolves” which led to other ventures throughout his career including the role Detective Joe-Rob Lambert in the movie “Die Hard with a Vengeance”.
Dale Evans: Born Lucille Wood Smith, Mrs. Evans was honored with her own star in 1983 and made a name for herself as an American writer, starlet, and singer. she became known through the acclaimed TV series “The Roy Rogers Show”, embodying the role of a cowgirl with her trusty steed, Buttermilk. Her success in TV, film, and song is often overlooked but is worth a listen. “Happy Trails” being one of her most well known.
Peggy Stewart: An example of feminine strength in the good ol’days. Peggy Stewart played the tough heroine rather than the dainty western flower in need of rescue. Although her roles were mostly supportive, the little known role of the independent woman she portrayed has been gaining popularity in the modern day, as less of an accent to a story and more a genre of film in its own right. Starring in well over thirty films this little known actress gained her star in 2002, and should not be overlooked.
There are plenty of screen stars to see on the streets of Newhall’s Walk of Western Stars. Over 80 in fact! Take a trip down Main St. and see who you can find and if you’re in need of directions, the Newhall Walking Tour App has you covered.
