Twenty-Six Point Two Miles
Ready, set, begin…. Whether it is a whistle that blows, or an instructor having you take an exam, you may want to keep a few things fresh in your mind. First, pace yourself. Second, take one step at a time. Did you “sign up” or join the “club” for everyone else or for you? You are the one putting in the long hours to see results. Complete the task at hand. What does it take to cross the finish line? Time, yes. Dedication, yes. Patience, yes. Perseverance, absolutely. If this was easy, many people would either have their degree in hand or earn a medal hanging on their wall. It takes training – mental training. The mind is powerful. With dedication, you will see results, maybe not overnight, but it will happen. If you need a break, take a break; a small break. With all the long hours of instruction in the classroom, try not to let those “learning-gaps” come back into as play as the summer months are just around the corner. It can be tempting to take the whole summer off. But let’s try to keep in mind as a team what dedication it took for all of us to see the “aha” moments that are rewarding.
As I mentioned in last month’s article, the moment when your child/student has finally grasped the concept between a simile and a metaphor is priceless. But this success did not happen overnight, it was not a “quick-fix”. Let’s rewind, what occurred? Many hours of instruction, progress-tests, follow- ups; in some cases, homework.
Now is the time to get a “second wind”. Take it one session at a time, one new concept at a time, one repetition at a time, and most importantly, be patient with yourself. Cross the finish line and make it count; education is not a sprint, but a marathon.
