August 1 through August 7 is World Breastfeeding Week
World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated annually August 1 to August 7, since 1992! In recent years, more mothers are choosing to breastfeed. For many decades, breastfeeding was a well-kept secret. With the promotion of formula and lack of support, families were not offered the many benefits of breastfeeding. Today, the World Health Organization and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend exclusive breastfeeding for babies, for the first 6 months of life, and then continuing to breastfeed to a year or longer.
Babies who are breastfed are at less risk for allergies, respiratory infections, diabetes, and some childhood cancers. Moms who breastfeed recover from childbirth more quickly and studies show that they have a reduced risk of breast and ovarian cancer later in life, and developing type 2 diabetes.
Not only does breastfeeding benefit the baby and mother, also it has advantages for the community as well! First, breastfeeding is good for the environment. It is 100% natural and there is no need for cans, bottles, or plastic nipples to throw away. Second, breastfeeding saves Americans millions of dollars that would otherwise be spent on formula. Lastly, babies being born today will be our future community’s leaders and the nutrition they receive through breastmilk will serve as the cornerstone of their optimal growth and development.
Breastfeeding is so important to families and the community that California supports it with three State laws.
Breastfeeding in Public (CA Civil Code 43.3): A mother may breastfeed her child in any location, public or private except the residence of another.
Breastfeeding at Work (CA Labor Code 1030-1033): Requires all California employers to provide reasonable, unpaid break time and a clean place for employees who want to pump.
Breastfeeding in School (CA Education Code 222): Requires all public schools to provide reasonable accommodations to nursing moms, including access to a private and secure room (other than a restroom).
If you know someone who is breastfeeding, show her your support! Women are more likely to breastfeed for a longer period of time if they feel supported.
