Why I Love My Cat Doctor Team – Part two
Last month I explained why I love my receptionists and veterinary assistants. This month, I’m going to finish my love letter with a description of my lab supervisor, registered veterinary technicians, operations coordinator and human resources coordinator/bookkeeper.
My lab supervisor is a man of many talents, who keeps all of our equipment working smoothly and accurately, runs quality controls weekly, fills many of our prescriptions, and in his free time, continues to teach at CSUN where he has been a professor for many years. He’s a tad overqualified for his position, but we don’t mind!
My registered veterinary technicians (RVT) are truly amazing. I cannot imagine practice life without them. They take the written orders that Dr. Carlie and I write after our examination of every patient and transform those orders into laboratory samples to be run either “in-house” or submitted to an outside lab. They place IV catheters and give injections and perform other needed treatments. They induce and maintain anesthesia, take regular and intraoral dental radiographs (x-rays), perform dental cleaning, polishing and some extractions, prepare patients for and assist in surgery, and supervise the veterinary assistants in their many tasks. They also monitor hospital and day patients throughout the day, quickly alerting a doctor to any change in patient status. They even keep an eye on our boarders and alert Dr. Carlie or I if a boarding cat is having any issues. My RVTs are very experienced, and I value the many clinical observations they bring to my attention. Indeed, they are fellow veterinary healthcare professionals.
My operations coordinator is a woman of many talents. She is responsible for team scheduling, ordering supplies, hospital safety and OSHA compliance, social media, IT and many other responsibilities too numerous to mention. Her dedication, hard work and creative problem solving ability leave me free to focus on my first love, helping my feline patients maintain or regain good health!
Last, but not least, my human resources coordinator/bookkeeper, has been with me many years. Every morning she and I discuss the financial health of the practice and decide how to manage cash flow to our many vendors. She also handles payroll, health insurance, 401(k) and other benefits for our team members, which, as you can see, they truly earn and deserve. She also provides much needed emotional support to this veterinarian, when the going gets tough.
I’m fortunate that many of my wonderful team members have been with me for over 10 years (and a couple over 20). That’s rare in this field, and I know how lucky I am to be able to work with them. Together, we are able to successfully meet the challenges every day that come with “Caring for cats and the people who love them.”
