Seniors and the Great Outdoors
That sweet time where late summer and early fall meet is upon us: Sunny days are beginning to be touched by cooler breezes and it is becoming a bit more comfortable to be outside for longer periods of time. This is a wonderful time to enjoy nature and spend time taking in the great outdoors.
Fresh air is wonderful for people of all ages, but planning is important for seniors who want to spend the day outside. Following these four easy steps below will help ensure a more comfortable and prepared day of adventure.
1. Wear sunscreen – our skin becomes less able to protect itself from skin cancer as we age, so apply sunscreen liberally before going out for the day. Be sure to pack a tube with you as well so you can reapply if going on a longer outing.
2. Pack medications – even if you are only planning on going out for a few hours, bring along enough medication to cover the day. That way, if you want to stay out for longer or are delayed getting home, you don’t have to worry about missing a dose.
3. Stay hydrated and cool – dehydration can happen quickly on warmer days, so drink plenty of water before, during and after your trip. Keep a bottle of water with you at all times and refill it at restaurants, water fountains or coffee shops if you are running low.
4. Tell someone where you are going – whether you are taking a walk in a busy park or exploring the great outdoors on your own, be sure to let someone know where you will be going and when you expect to be back. This is just a precaution – most excursions are uneventful – but having someone looking out for you in case of an accident is easy and can be lifesaving.
Be safe and have fun out there!
