Sushi’s Popularity!
The popularity of sushi in the United States began around the 1960’s when the times were changing and so were the mindsets of most Americans in regard to entertainment, fashion, and food. In 1966 a small sushi bar opened in Little Tokyo in Los Angeles, called Kawafuku and it was the first sushi restaurant in America. Thus began our love affair with sushi. Sushi restaurants have grown and multiplied and just in the last 20 years have been recognized as a healthy alternative!
The origins of sushi can be traced back to the third and fourth century A.D. Sushi is a type of food preparation consisting of cooked vinegared-rice combined with other ingredients such as raw seafood, vegetables and sometimes tropical fruits and is any dish which is made with vinegared sushi rice. The difference between sashimi is just the meat served without other ingredients and sushi uses rice and other ingredients such as vegetables, which are rolled up in a sheet of nori(seaweed) and sliced into pieces. Nigiri is sashimi that is served on a molded rectangle of rice.
As we roll along, pardon the pun, there are many types of variations of sushi within the United States and many customers will also specify the exact ingredients for their sushi roll, this is fairly common in most restaurants. The most common sushi rolls are: spicy tuna roll, tempura roll, unagi roll, California roll, Inari, Rainbow roll, Dragon roll ,etc. Sushi is eaten with condiments such as shoyu, soy sauce and can be flavored with wasabi which is a spicy and flavorful paste made from the grated root of the Wasabia japonica plant.
