Raising Awareness… Together We Can Help Find a Cure
The arrival of autumn marks an important time of year for those who have been affected in some way by Alzheimer’s Disease: this is the season where caregivers, family members, senior living communities, spouses and those with an Alzheimer’s diagnosis all come together to help raise important funding for the fight against this widespread disease. Held annually in more than 600 communities nationwide, the Alzheimer’s Association’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s® is the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. This inspiring event calls on participants of all ages and abilities to reclaim the future for millions!
The Santa Clarita Walk will be held on Saturday, October 8 at Bridgeport Park, with registration starting at 7:30 a.m. This year’s Walk will incorporate the Promise Flowers. Promise Flowers represent the diverse reasons that people gather for the walk, with different colors symbolizing the relationship that the person carrying it has to the cause: Blue — I have Alzheimer’s, Yellow — I am supporting or caring for someone with Alzheimer’s, Purple — I have lost someone to Alzheimer’s, Orange — I support the cause and a vision of a world without Alzheimer’s. Participants will have an opportunity to write a personal message on their Promise Flower and then come together for a heart-felt ceremony prior to the walk. Everyone is welcome to take their Promise Flower home after the event as a remembrance of their Walk experience.
If you are interested in being a part of this important event, there are many ways to support the cause.
1. You can start a Walk Team (or join one that is already created) and ask people to donate to your walk. The Walk to End Alzheimer’s website has some great ideas for easy fundraising events: https://www.alz.org/walk/. At Oakmont, we have had great success with theme parties: most recently “Barbecue, Beer and Boogie” that featured Southern-style Barbecue prepared by our Executive Chef and a Country Western Band. Everyone loves a party for a good cause!
2. You can volunteer to help at the walk. If you are unable to walk, but still want to participate, the walk always needs volunteers.
3. You can donate. Every dollar counts, so whether you donate a little or a lot, your support matters.
We invite you all to come walk with us on the 8th, or just stop by and say hi. See you at the Walk!
