November 17: Triumph over cigarette addiction with the Great American Smokeout.  Sadly, 42 million Americans continue to light up.  To better educate the public about the hazards of smoking, and ultimately help smokers kick the habit, the ACS holds its annual Great American Smokeout each third Thursday in November.  The official sponsor of birthdays, the ACS urges smokers to give up all forms of tobacco, including vape sticks, for at least one day, then hopefully for their lifetime.  The American Cancer Society would love to help you learn how to kick ash for keeps!  For Smokeout information and ACS stop-smoking resources and tools, call 800-227-2345.  Or visit Cancer.org/smokeout.
December 3: Luminaria Bags at St. Kateri’s Holiday Event
The American Cancer Society will be selling luminaria bags on Saturday, December 3 at Saint Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Parish’ 2016 Caring and Sharing Christmas Festival, located at 22508 Copper Hill Dr.  Gold Star luminaria bags will sell for $15 each, and white bags for $10.  Luminaria bags honor all lives affected by cancer, some in memory, some for those who are battling cancer, others for people who have overcome the disease.  Each dollar raised helps support ACS programs and research.  For information about luminaria bags, please contact the SCV office at 661-298-0886 option 3, or visit scvrelay.org.
FYI: Where ACS Money and Help is Directed
Every dollar raised at Relay For Life impacts the American Cancer Society’s mission to save lives and celebrate life.  Here is how that fundraising helped communities in 2015: $150 million funded cutting-edge research grants; 51,000 patients were guided through the health care system by ACS patient navigators; 1 million requests for help, info and support were answered via phone, email and online chat; 316,000 free rides were provided for in-need oncology patients to and from treatment; 361,000 nights of free lodging were provided to patients/families undergoing “away” cancer treatments via ACS Hope Lodge facilities.
To learn about the ACS’ many programs, services and research efforts, visit cancer.org.  Contact the ACS SCV office at 661-298-0886 option 3.  Our local office is located at 25020 Avenue Stanford, suite 170, Valencia.  Cancer information, answers and hope are available 24/7 at 800-227-2345.
