When Choosing a School for your Child, Consider Class Size
Headlines like “Class Sizes Continue to Grow Amid Shrinking School Year” have California parents worried – especially in family-centric communities like Santa Clarita. Their concerns are valid. Based on the oft-cited STAR project findings, as well as coordinated studies that confirmed STAR’s results, class size reaches peak effectiveness when classes contain between 13 and 17 students.
That’s unfortunate. According to Public School Review (www.publicschoolreview.com), the benefits of smaller class sizes are numerous and include: increased individualized attention; more direct student-teacher interaction; increased flexibility to incorporate a variety of instructional approaches; reduced classroom distraction; fewer classroom discipline problems; higher likelihood for students to participate in class; and an increased amount of time for teachers to cover additional material and utilize supplementary texts and enrichment activities.
SCV parents are a dedicated lot. In order to best position their children for success today and in the future, parents arrange after-school tutoring in math, reading and science and costly enrichment classes in art, music and theater. Even physical-education instruction is now outsourced in an attempt to keep children competitive for college and life. It’s a hectic practice that can leave both parent and child frustrated and burnt out.
Those who choose private education see a saner, more fulfilling alternative every day. Legacy Christian Academy boasts a 1:13 student-to-teacher ratio, as well as academically-accelerated curriculum that encourages instructor-led small-group study. Legacy’s small-group rotation provides remarkable opportunities for a truly-customized academic experience that increases confidence, improves comprehension and allows for a deeper, more meaningful understanding and engagement with the subject matter. Legacy’s commitment to STEM, the Arts, foreign-language instruction and sports is also well known.
Legacy Christian Academy, a kindergarten-through-eighth-grade school, is currently enrolling students for the 2017-18 school year. Private tours and consultations are available.
