Why do I need an Advance Healthcare Directive? What is the difference between a POLST and a DNR?
Making difficult medical decisions can only be eased by preparation. Equipping yourself with the appropriate documents like an Advance Healthcare Directive and POLST will make the world of difference for your loved ones.
An Advance Healthcare Directive is a legal document used to identify decisions made for your healthcare, as well as designate decision makers appointed to act on your behalf, known as your Agents. Your Agents have a duty to carry out your healthcare decisions and wishes regarding life support, dementia powers, cremation verses burial, etc. The Advance Healthcare Directive serves as a guide for your agent to assist them when placed in difficult decision-making situations.
In addition, a POLST should be considered for someone who is seriously ill. A POLST is a physicians order for life-sustaining treatment signed by the patient and the physician. It is printed on bright pink paper and should be placed in plain sight to make it easy to spot during an emergency. The POLST gives the patient power to make choices for his or her own end-of-life care. Please discuss the POLST with your physician to learn more about its use.
Often, there is confusion about the difference between a POLST and a DNR. A DNR is a do-not-resuscitate order written by a doctor to instruct health care providers on whether or not to provide CPR in an emergency. The DNR does not have instructions for any other treatment and is restricted to instructions for CPR only, thus a POLST and an Advance Healthcare Directive are necessary for complete medical decision making.
It is important to understand that as challenges arise, decisions will become more difficult and unclear. Equipping yourself with the right tools now will help you make these difficult decisions.
