It Really is Not One in Two
After having attended the most beautiful wedding imaginable at Cipriani’s on 42nd street in Manhattan (Google it) with 350 people and three A list celebrities on the same night as the bombing in Chelsea (which with my luck happened to be right next to my hotel and garage) I became curious about the divorce rate. Quite some time back, when I spoke with my kids about it, I told them the divorce rate was one in two. They told me I was wrong. I get that a lot from them. Anyway, after the wedding, I decided to see for myself.
The good news, according to an article in the New York Times entitled The Divorce Surge is Over But the Myth Lives on (12/2/14), if current trends continue, the divorce rate will be one in three marriages and not one in two. Woo Hoo. Divorce rates have been steadily declining since the 1970’s and 80’s. Heck, my parents were pioneers and divorced when I was seven.
As a family law attorney, I see plenty of fighting in couples having children without getting the piece of paper. While there are not many fights over the division of property in those cases, there still are many fights over finances. The calculation of child support being the motivating factor. I am not suggesting that marriage is for everyone.
I’ll be honest. I have become very cynical about the institution of marriage. However, listening to the nuptials of my 27 year old nephew and his beautiful bride at their wedding which we who attended believed cost the parents right around a million dollars renewed my hope in love and marriage. Even Al and Peggy Bundy, the love and marriage originals – stayed together for 10 seasons.
