Red Dresses on Display Throughout Santa Clarita to Promote the End of Domestic Violence Dresses Symbolize Seven Local Victims of Domestic Abuse
The City of Santa Clarita, along with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station and the Domestic Violence Center of Santa Clarita Valley, have joined the Zonta Club of Santa Clarita in an important campaign aimed toward bringing awareness to domestic violence in the community. As part of the “Zonta says NO to Domestic Violence” campaign, the “Red Dress Project” will display seven red dresses representing seven local women who lost their lives to domestic violence. The dresses will be on display throughout the City now until to Saturday, December 10.
All of the dresses will be displayed outside, vulnerable to wind and weather. Those elements will animate the dresses, representing the life that is missing. The color of the dresses are meant to symbolize love and spilled blood, an inescapable reminder of the intimacy of domestic abuse.
The red dresses can be viewed at the following locations and times:
• Old Town Newhall Farmers Market – Saturday, November 26 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., at 24500 Main Street
• Santa Clarita Valley Court House – Monday, November 28, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at 23747 Valencia Boulevard
• KHTS Studio on Main Street –Tuesday, November 29, from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m., at 24320 Main St.
• College of the Canyons, Honor Grove – Wednesday, November 30 and Thursday, December 1, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at 26455 Rockwell Canyon Road
•Veterans Historical Plaza – Friday, December 2, from noon to 2 p.m., and Saturday, December 3, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., at 24275 Walnut Street
• Valencia Library/Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station – Monday, December 5, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., at 23743 Valencia Blvd
• Santa Clarita Valley Court House – Tuesday, December 6, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., at 23747 Valencia Boulevard
• Santa Clarita Aquatic Center/Skate Park – Wednesday, December 7, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., at 20850 Centre Pointe Parkway
• City Hall – Thursday, December 8, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at 23920 Valencia Boulevard
• West Ranch High School – Friday, December 9, from 9:45 a.m. to 11 a.m., at 26255 Valencia Boulevard
• Old Town Newhall Farmers Market – Saturday, December 10 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., at 24500 Main Street
“The red dress display is a heart-felt way to tell the story of lives lost too soon,” said Captain Roosevelt Johnson. “We hope it will encourage our residents to learn more about this serious issue in our community and educate them on the available resources.”
The Zonta Club of Santa Clarita is a member of Zonta International, a worldwide service organization of professional women, recognized by the United Nations with consultative status. The clubs support a broad range of services that have the potential to make a global impact and can be sustained through local efforts. The Santa Clarita Valley club was founded 36 years ago and has more than 70 members.
