Celebrity Sightings – January 2017
This month for Celebrity Sightings, we have a couple celebrities who have a strong sense of self and are trailblazers in their fields.
A star at the plate herself, local resident Lindsey Arellano spotted a baseball legend. One of the most feared sluggers in the game, Darryl Strawberry is an American former Major League Baseball right fielder, as well as an ordained Christian minister and author. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Strawberry was known for his prodigious home-runs and his intimidating presence. In the batter’s box, he stood 6 foot, 6 inches tall with a signature swing. He played for 17 years, helping lead the New York Mets to a World Series championship in 1986 and, later, took the New York Yankees to three World Series championships in 1996, 1998 and 1999. He also was voted to the All-Star Game eight times due in part to his popularity with the fans. After his baseball career, he opened his own restaurant, Strawberry’s Sports Grill, in Douglaston, Queens, which later closed in 2012. Today, Strawberry appears on television and other shows, sharing his belief in Christianity. Strawberry’s son later went on to play mens basketball.
Rowan Smyth, son of Santa Clarita Mayor Cameron Smyth, was on set of the show Comedy Bang! Bang! starring Weird Al Yankovic. A man of many hats, Weird Al is a singer, songwriter, parodist, record producer, satirist, actor, voice actor, music video director and author. Some of his biggest hits are satirical songs that take a humorous spin on pop culture. He often parodies other musical acts, and one of his most popular acts is his accordion playing. He has won four Grammy Awards and 11 additional nominations. He has four gold records and six platinum records. Weird Al also has starred in TV shows and has made guest appearances in many other shows.
Rowan also met the program creator, writer and actor of Comedy Bang! Bang! Scott Aukerman. Comedy Bang! Bang! is a talk show parody that features celebrity guests, comedy sketches and animation. Based on the podcast of the same name. Scott is also known for writing and producing, Shark Tale, Run Ronnie Run and Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis.
