Sock Drive Hosted by Drug Free Youth in Town Program Brings in Over 4,000 Pairs of Socks to Donate to Local Non-Profits
During the month of October, Drug Free Youth in Town (DFYIT) clubs from 15 junior high and high schools in Santa Clarita participated in SOCKTOBER, a month long sock drive benefitting low income families and the homeless. Over 4,000 pairs of new socks were collected by DFYIT members.
Rancho Pico Junior High School collected the most socks for the campaign, with a total of 855 pairs. Saugus High School ranked in second with a collection of 709 new pairs of socks. With nearly 3,000 student participants through the DFYIT program, the campaign reached its goal of collecting at least one pair per member.
Community service is an important component of the DFYIT program. By organizing the SOCKTOBER campaign on campus, students have an opportunity to give back to the community in which they live. The program teaches them the importance of helping their neighbors. “SOCKTOBER is important because we are giving back to our community and setting a good example to our peers,” says Riley Blaugrund, an 8th grade student at Rancho Pico.
The socks will be donated to three non-profit organizations in Santa Clarita, including Bridge to Home, the Domestic Violence Center of Santa Clarita Valley and Family Promise of Santa Clarita Valley.
