Botox: Fact or Fiction
Botox smoothes frown lines and crows feet helping you retain a more youthful, less tired appearance. Its affordability, effectiveness, safety record, and treatment comfort make Botox a true winner compared to other anti-wrinkle treatments. Although results are temporary, most people achieve the desired effect for up to four months.
Botox has been used safely to treat medical conditions since 1989. Cosmetically, Botox has been used for the treatment of facial lines since 2002. With over 2.8 million procedures performed annually for the last 12 years, no serious side effects have ever been reported with cosmetic use; even in people who have used Botox over many years.
Unfortunately, many candidates for injection are hesitant due to misconceptions. Various myths circulate around this treatment making it hard to separate fact from fiction.
One common fear is that injecting Botox into the face will cause harm. However, for cosmetic use, the typical patient receives an average of 20 to 70 units of Botox per treatment. The lethal dose of Botox is 3000 units, 100 times the average dose given for treatment of lines and wrinkles. Even Tylenol, one of the safest pain medications, can cause liver failure and death when used in an amount as little as 20 times its regular dose.
Another concern is facial “freezing.” If too much Botox is injected, one can lose the action of expression. However, if muscular balance is maintained by injecting only small doses into specific muscles, the result is a softening of unwanted lines and wrinkles without compromising facial expressions. This is totally dependent on the injector.
Other misconceptions are that injection is painful and eyelids will “droop” after treatment. Injections are virtually painless and require no anesthesia. As well, when administered properly by an experienced medical professional, the risk of droopy eyelids is lower then two percent nationally and less then one in 1000 at Dermacure.
Finally, some believe Botox only treats existing wrinkles. However, Botox is better used preventatively to avoid developing deep, permanent wrinkles. Horizontal forehead lines, smoker’s lines, and bunny lines are other areas conducive to Botox treatment.
