What is Causing My Sensitive Teeth?
Many people suffer from sensitive teeth. Are you one? Does brushing or flossing make you wince sometimes? Does having ice cream or hot coffee give you a painful sensation? If you answer yes to either question, then you may have sensitive teeth.
There are many causes to sensitive teeth. Possible ones could include: Tooth decay (cavities), fractured teeth, worn fillings, Gum disease, worn tooth enamel, or an exposed tooth root.
All the causes of sensitive teeth come from the dentin layer of the tooth being exposed. In a healthy tooth, a layer of enamel (outside white part of the tooth) protects the tooth above the gum line. Underneath the enamel protective layer is dentin, which is the “live” part of the tooth. Dentin contains microscopic tubules that lead directly to the nerve/pulp of the tooth (think of fiber optic cables). When cold, acidic or sticky food reaches those microscopic tubules it also touches the nerves/pulp of the tooth sending a sometimes painful sensation. This is called hypersensitivity.
There are treatments for sensitive teeth. Depending on the cause of the sensitivity, your dentist can provide the appropriate level of treatment. Desensitizing toothpaste contains compounds that block the microscopic tubules to stop the transmission of sensation from the exposed dentin to the nerve. It requires multiple applications and typically takes two to three weeks before elimination of sensitivity is felt. Desensitizing toothpaste also requires the patient to continue using the product for the desensitization to continue. Fluoride gel is given in-office or at home. It is accompanied with custom made trays where the patient is asked to wear the trays and fluoride gel for a determined amount of time daily. Fluoride has shown during clinical trials to show anti-caries (anti-decay) and desensitizing effects. A crown, inlay or bonding may be used to correct and remove decay or flaw that is causing sensitivity. A surgical gum graft may be done to cover the exposed root surface causing root sensitivity. A root canal may be recommended when the sensitivity is severe or persistent and cannot be treated by other means.
Proper oral hygiene is essential in preventing sensitive tooth pain. Discuss with your dentist if you are experiencing tooth sensitivity. There are many new dental products to eliminate sensitivity.
