Getting your Three- and Four-year-old Ready for Preschool!
We all know that all children develop at different rates; however, in the age range of three and four years of age there are some skills that are very important for your child’s self-esteem and learning process. For instance, being able to speak clearly is important in order that they are understood by others.
Your preschooler of three and four years of age is growing and should be developing much more socially, they may have real friendships and can understand the causes of feelings. They are much more coordinated physically with running and climbing and may be as progressed in riding a tricycle.
Your child of three to four years of age, may or should be doing things such as socializing with a broader range of people, understanding how to share and play well with other children, using their hands and flingers skillfully, holding a pencil with a mature grip and using their preferred hand, speaking well and decreasing temper tantrums.
Their are many activities for ages three to four to help them in the developmental stages. For instance building towers and drawing shapes, dressing him or herself, speaking in simple six-word sentences and catching and tossing a ball all help in the development of this age range.
As their parent you can help by playing games that are fun and also make them use their imagination such as name and spelling games, number match up, teaching them their address, having fun with kitchen shapes, cloud watching. All of these can be made fun and used as a learning tool! Support your child’s learning by encouraging them to explore, experiment and try new things, talk with them about what is happening and encourage your child to talk, find out answers to questions together, remind your child of events that have happened before, make suggestions about imaginary play or provide props for play, share stories, songs and rhymes. By providing your child with new experiences you are strengthening your child’s love of learning!
