Performing- Everyone Has a Different Learning Style
Performing can be like a sport. Everyone starts off at a different level of skill and ability. Some people may be more naturally gifted, but everybody can enjoy themselves and improve. We all learn in different ways.
Right-Brain or Left-Brain Dominant
Right-brain people tend to be more creative and impulsive; often jumping in with immediate success. They tend to ‘fly by the seat of their pants’ and sometimes get lucky. But sometimes this approach causes trouble. I instruct right-brained students to work on self-discipline.
Left-brain people are more analytical. They tend to learn concepts thoroughly. They analyze their performance, but often focus on what they do wrong. This helps them learn from their mistakes, but they often get stuck and cannot move forward with the creative process. I instruct left-brained students to ‘check the brain’ at the door, and give exercises to occupy the left-brain so the right-brain is free to create.
Grouper vs. Stringer
Stringers prefer a systematic, methodical approach with a careful plan of action. They tend to build progressively with what is known as ‘basement-up learning.’ Stringers often overlook the broad concepts.
Groupers have a learning style known as ‘top down.’ They need to get the overall view before getting to the details. They enjoy looking at how all the pieces relate to each other, excelling at understanding the ‘big picture’, but are shaky with details.
Personality Tests
Popular personality tests categorize individual types. They help determine how you learn and relate to people. Some break personalities into color groups. Others use animals to describe different types. These tests are designed to help different personalities work and function together. They measure and describe thinking preferences and how people learn/react to situations.
I believe performing arts education is affected by different ways people think and feel. What works for some may not work for others.
There is no right or wrong way!
Become aware of how you or your child learns. Don’t compare yourself with others. Learn to enjoy and cultivate your own talent. It will help you make the most of your lesson and practice time.
The success of education depends upon cooperation between teacher, student, and parent. VIBE Performing Arts Studios endeavors to help all students experience excitement and dedication necessary to help them succeed in life as well as on stage.
