Dog Breeds, Energy Levels and Your Lifestyle
Dogs, just like people have their own unique personalities and energy levels. When choosing a dog for you and/or your family, understanding the history of the breed, their personality and energy level is a tremendously important factor in helping make a successful match for pet and new home.
Low-Energy Dog Breeds
Low-energy breeds are for people who prefer calm dogs instead of overly energetic ones that always want to get up and go. These dogs are well known for being great travel companions due to size and composure. While all dogs require some exercise, low-energy dog breeds don’t need long walks or extensive workouts. These breeds are content to lounge around and snooze much of the day. They’re typically very attached to their handlers and usually enjoy cuddling and keeping close often too. When choosing a breed, it is important to consider your own activity level and lifestyle. Some of the most popular calm dog breeds include the Basset Hound, Bulldog, Dachshund, French Bulldog, Pekingese, Pug, Shih Tzu, and Yorkshire Terrier.
Medium-Energy Dog Breeds
Looking for a dog that doesn’t need a lot of exercise, but isn’t a couch potato either? A medium-energy dog could be right for you. These dogs typically will need one walk a day, which can range from 20 to 60 min based on your workout style. Sometimes these dogs are easily entertained with simple games like fetch for a short period too. While energy levels vary from dog to dog, some breeds are known to be more active than others. Some of the most popular medium-energy dog breeds are the Bloodhound, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Chihuahua, Dachshund, Maltese, and Toy Poodle.
High-Energy Dog Breeds
These guys are the super athletes of dogs, the high octane, turbo charged, and nitro circus of doggies. If you’re an active person looking for a dog to match your liveliness, choosing a high-energy dog will be suitable to your on-the-go lifestyle. These high-exercise dogs need daily vigorous activity, so be sure to give your dog plenty of attention and space in which to romp. These dogs love to run, jump, dig, swim and generally any physical challenge you can throw at them is welcome. High-energy dogs should not be alone for long periods of time. Notable choices for high-energy dog breeds include the Airedale Terrier, Australian Shepherd, Border Collie, Dalmatian, Irish Setter, Rhodesian Ridgeback, and Weimaraner.
