Pizza ’s Popularity
Pizza is considered one of the most popular foods in the United States and the world. It has a long history which can date back centuries. Originally, pizza was a flattened bread that was used by several European civilizations and with the arrival of tomatoes from the New World in the 16th century there was the beginning of pizza as we know it.
Pizza is a yeasted flatbread topped with tomato sauce and cheese and baked in an oven. it can be topped with meats, vegetables and condiments. The crust may vary according to style such as thin as in a typical hand tossed Neapolitan pizza or thick as in a deep-dish Chicago style.
Naples was the center for pizza innovation where the local cooks started using tomato toppings. By the 18th Century, pizza had become more popular than ever and was sold on the streets which were tourists destinations.
Most Americans became acquainted with pizza in the late 19th Century when many Italians had moved and concentrated in many large cities. Chicago, New York and Philadelphia were some of the first cities in the U.S. to sell pizza. It has become one of the most beloved meals and our fascination with pizza has not stopped.
Pizza has distinct regional styles such as Chicago, California, New York and Greek styles. The debate over where the best slice is still continues to this day.
Everybody loves pizza, and it doesn’t matter where it originated or which style is the best because we all have our own personal tastes and opinions – and they are all different! But there’s one thing we know: Pizza’s popularity and love will never go out of style!
