You Can’t Take It With You as Curious Savages and Madcap Families Don the Canyon Theatre Guild Stage
The Canyon Theatre Guild offers two delightful plays this spring, where somewhat unconventional folk turn out to be wiser and happier than the supposed sane-and-normal people around them. The Curious Savage, is filled with heart and contrasts avarice with generosity. Ethel Savage is a slightly eccentric, kind new widow whose husband left her a substantial fortune. She wants to establish a generous fund to help others realize their hopes and dreams. To stop her, her self-seeking adult step-children have her committed to a sanatorium. There, Mrs. Savage meets the colorful social misfits, who could benefit from her help. They join forces and lead the self-seeking siblings on a hilarious chase, ultimately driving them to their own destruction. The Curious Savage is a whimsical comedy and the audience is sure to leave knowing that the neglected virtue of kindness has not been lost. Performances are Fridays, March 24, April 7, 14, at 8 p.m.; Saturdays, March 25 and April 8, 15, 29 at 2 p.m.; Saturdays, April 1 at 8 pm and Sunday, April 2 at 2 p.m.
The CTG also presents the Pulitzer Prize winning, You Can’t Take It With You. This play has the audience beaming from curtain to curtain as they meet a zany, improbably happy family in Great Depression. The Sycamore family follows their bliss and contentedly live under one roof, while ineptly pursuing passions ranging from classical ballet to the making of fireworks. The Sycamores’ one relatively conventional daughter is reluctant to introduce her beau to her family. Tony Kirby is son of an uptight Wall Street bigwig and his socialite wife. A comic collision ensues when the Kirby’s come for dinner at the Sycamore’s — on the wrong night, culminating in an invading squad of G-men and exploding fireworks. Will the lovers stay together in spite of family differences? Can the snobbish Kirby’s learn to let go and enjoy life? You Can’t Take It With You sets chaos, laughs and fireworks next to a heartfelt underlying message for us all. Try not to wipe the smile off your face when it’s over. Performances are Friday, April 28 at 8 p.m.; Saturdays, April 1 at 2 p.m.; Saturdays, March 25, April 8, 15, 29 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, March 26 and April 9 at 2 p.m.
