Issues of The Heart
Heart conditions exist in many pets, and vary in type similar to heart conditions in people. Sometimes pet owners aren’t aware of the condition, and sometimes there might be symptoms which don’t seem to be related to heart problems, yet the underlying cause is the heart. One example is coughing. It could be an upper respiratory infection, bronchitis, or other airway diseases. However, a thorough examination and listening with a stethoscope can many times allow the veterinarian to identify a heart condition such a “leaky valve” in the form of a heart murmur.
An electrocardiogram (ECG) is a very important tool used in the diagnosis of many heart conditions, especially when arrhythmias are found. The ECG records the electrical activity of the heart and thus allows the veterinarian to analyze how the heart is working, and helps tailor treatment.
Radiographs (X-rays) of the chest are very important in identifying other characteristics of heart problems, such as congestion or fluid buildup in the lungs and chest, and give a good idea of the size of the heart and some of its chambers. Many of the large blood vessels in the chest as well as airways are visible and help piece together what’s going on.
Ultrasound imaging of the heart (echocardiogram) is an even more precise method of assessing heart function by allowing the veterinarian to view the heart, its chambers, and surrounding tissues in motion, while using still images to take different measurements.
With the use of all these tools a correct diagnosis can be made and the appropriate therapy started.
Fortunately, there are several board-certified cardiologists nearby to refer pets in case of more specialized care.
