Beautiful Old Town Newhall
While historical buildings and old-time feelings may saturate the streets of Old Town Newhall, the place cannot be described as out of style. The constantly changing events and stores are complemented by the history that surrounds the area making for a classical, yet progressive, environment.
Rich in history, Old Town Newhall holds tight to the roots from whence it came. The area was originally purchased in the 1870s for only two dollars an acre, and now boasts 271-acres. Now, there are sites that have become memorialized for all to see such as the Saugus Train Station where Theodore Roosevelt once stopped in 1903, film locations like the Way Station Coffee Shop, the 10,000-square-foot colonial revival mansion at the William S. Hart Ranch & Museum, and grazing American Bison.
One of the main historical features that is easy to spot in Old Town Newhall is the Walk of Western Stars that honor western legends by placing stars with their names on it down the walkway similar to the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Since 1981 the inductees have been honored with bronze stars and terrazzo tiles embedded into Main Street. Santa Clarita, being one of the most filmed areas in the Los Angeles area, has been flooded by screen legends like John Ford and William S. Hart for years, as they try to capture the authentic Western heritage through film. Today the Stars honor actors, directors, and film professionals like Roy Rogers, John Wayne, Gene Autry, Sam Elliott, and many more. These inspirational people remind all those who trod upon their stars of the rich history of California and the power of working hard.
All of these historical places are mixed together with modern stores and restaurants creating a beautiful marriage of history and modernism. The ever-changing business terrain is opening its doors to new businesses coming like Laemmle Theater, Cal Shrimp House, Newhall Press Room, the Luxen Hotel, and much more all on their way in.
There is no shortage of fun and festivities in town as Thursdays@Newhall offer free evening events every Thursday transforming the bustling retail and dining destination it is during the day to an arts and entertainment area at night. Events feature music, speakers, cars, food, themed activities, dancing, and above all, high energy and fun for all kinds of people.
Speaking of fun, the day amenities match the entertainment of the night events as eclectic shopping and dining is offered with boutique stores and both fine and casual restaurants. The small-town beginnings of Santa Clarita are maintained through the personal relationships in the stores as business owners will call you by name and find the best way to serve you–keeping with the tight-knit feel SCV is known for.
There is an abundance of things to do, but there is always the simple pull of a chance to stroll down a nice walkway, enjoy lights, charming buildings, landscaped walkways, comfortable seating areas, and a variety of fun for both the day and night.
As the history is preserved it provides a way for modern charm and culture to infiltrate its way into Old Town Newhall without disrupting the flow of the streets. The combination of modernist culture with Hollywood glamour can be seen in the arts and entertainment district in the Mixed-Use Project. This project broke ground in March as the city began building a new 372-stalled parking structure with rooftop deck special event area. This project, as a whole, is set to bring 20,000 square feet of space for restaurant and retail and the development of the Laemmle Theater housing 500 seats.
Ever changing, yet constant, Old Town Newhall has something for everyone and it is no surprise that residents and business owners alike have chosen to call this renovated, historical corner of culture their home. With strong community, vibrant events, and fine dining, it is worth the visit to see the town in day, night and all times of the year.
